[Sometime in the day, a mysterious(?) package arrives at the door of Katsuki's apartment. Its attached note reads:]
Happy Birthday. Tsumugi-san left to this to me, before. If you lose your way in the dark, whisper "please light the way". You'll understand what happens next. Please protect it. - Todoroki
[Enclosed is a gourmet box of snacks (spicy cheeses, sausage, dips), a jacket, and a small, clear glass pendant filled with loose lotus petals. The Floral Illuminator*.
*Avalon Note: "This necklace contains a small magical pearl and a magical lotus in a vial. Whisper "please light the way" to the bottle and it will cause all flowers within a 100-foot range to faintly glow, providing light in the dark."]
[At the sound of the door bell, Katsuki perks up from his spot and slowly gets to his feet. Using the wall to help himself walk, having to press against it to keep his weight stable. But he's a determined boy, and he makes it to the door to open it for Koro.]
Koro?
[He wasn't expecting anyone to be visiting around this time, truthfully. So he can't hide the surprise and curiosity in his eyes as he looks at those bags.]
Did Commander tell you to buy groceries?
[The blonde will move to the side, leaning against the wall out of the way so Koro can come inside.]
[Rinku sends a care package with a signed "sorry I heard you got bit" note!
...It's juice boxes (full of blood) and cake (also blood). At least it's in ice so it won't go bad. She's also added a seashell and a USB stick of music (it sure doesn't sound like hers).]
Katsuki is going to take that package and store the juiceboxes in the fridge. Hopefully no one mistakes them for actual juice! (but he lives with hijikata, mister 'takes up the whole fridge with mayo', so maybe it'd be deserved!!
Also he's confused about the seashell, but will put it somewhere safe and he's surprised at how she's able to pick music that he actually likes to listen to!]
[Katsuki was in the sitting room of this old, Japanese style home. Scrolling his phone when he suddenly hears a noise ("Eh?") that sounds human coming from his kitchen. Followed by a nervous heartbeat that his vampire senses can hear perfectly.
...no one else should be home for hours.]
Who the fuck is in my house?
[Angry and on guard, the one armed boy gets to his feet and activates his Quirk in his hand. Gathering sweat in preparation for kicking ass!!
He doesn't go to where the noise is, though. Wanting this criminal to come to him instead. Waiting like a predator about to catch it's prey.]
[It's been... who knows how many days. At least a week, but Katsuki hasn't been able to keep count. An icy wind had rolled into town, and near immediately it froze the blonde's barely-beating heart. The pain was very intense, and reminded him too much of when his heart had a hole blasted through and he was forced to fight through the pain. It burned and breathing felt like torture. Every breath was sharp and cold, and overtime he developed a horrible cough that forced him to expel ice crystals every now and then. Which tore his throat up on the way out, and caused his voice to be extremely hoarse and rough. Moreso than usual.
In the beginning, Katsuki tried his best to do what he could while he was sick. He continued to do his job as a nighttime traffic cop, and tried to do those test things with other people. But by the time day four hit, he was unable to get himself to leave the futon he shared with Shoto. Shoto, who also had been sick as a dog from day one. The two of them were suffering from the same symptoms and neither of them had the energy to do anything besides sleep by day five. And today, a couple of days later, was even worse... at least for Katsuki.
His chest felt like it was never going to heal. It felt as though his heart and lungs were ripped to shreds and his icy-cold blood was filling his chest-- and the only thing that helped even a little was physical contact. It worked a lot better with Izuku, who hadn't been infected yet but Katsuki spent every second where Izuku wasn't home cuddling with Shoto. It didn't help as much, but there was still a little bit of warmth that spread through his heart when he touched the other sick boy. And these feelings he's harbored for months now made it feel even warmer...
So today, Katsuki turns so he's facing Shoto in the futon and wraps his arm around him. Cuddling close with the other frigid boy in hopes it'll help give him the energy to get out of bed.]
...this sucks..
[He whispers that quietly to Shoto, who he isn't even sure is awake or not. He just needs to voice out his discomfort to anyone that would listen.]
[Drawn into comfort, the boy beside him shifts at the sound of his voice, and he fights off sleep. A little warmth's crept in where he's pressed to him close; and Shoto's Quirk attempts, "flickers", and he leans brow against brow with sweat-damp fringe against the paler boy's face; a lace of frost in his touch. His left hand sliding between the two to brush his palm to soft fabric, his fingers stretched into star-burst's warmth, left palm pressing into his heart, the slow-beat thump beneath fabric and skin and hummed through the folds of his shirt, to send heat back.
He almost laughs.]
I always thought it'd be more violent than this...
[A death from war, or a Nomu; in Toya's arms, at Toya's feet when he'd bathed him in Blueflame a second time. His eyes slip closed, and then he's glowing against him dimmer than a firefly's light. When fingers drop to grasp fingers, it's with intent to squeeze small sparks from out of the lines of his palm. His mother's touch, his father's strength against Explosion's own sweat, to lend the other boy heat...
[Katsuki's eyebrows raise just a little when his complaint is answered by Shoto's body shifting to turn his attention to him. How the other boy rests his forehead against the blonde's, and his Quirk activates just enough to flicker warmth against his chest. There's this bitter tone to Shoto's voice, almost laughing at the absurdity of the situation. These two reckless, selfless Heroes who both nearly met such grizzly ends during a war... stuck in bed, sick as could be. Katsuki's heart had been nearly punched right out of his chest-- and yet this freezing, sickening cold had the battered organ in worse conditions. He was able to stand and fight through pure willpower and inner strength, but like this?
Katsuki could barely get himself to eat. He couldn't imagine trying to get to his feet and fight, right now. He's had to suspend his officer duties as it is.
It was embarrassing, honestly. Shameful. And he refuses the mere idea that the two of them were going to die like this. Shaking his head as the other boy calls this "the end", and continues to try and warm his cold body up.
He doesn't have much energy when his hand is taken into Shoto's, but when he feels the other boy squeeze he activates what he can. Warming his own palm back against Shoto's, and allowing little crackles and pops of sweat to bead out of his skin. Nothing crazy, not wanting to start a fire indoors or ruin Shoto's nice futon. Though.. he can't really make enough sweat to blow them up, anyway....
He just wants to help how he can. To feel like he did something, if this was truly their last moments together. If this illness was bad enough for it to get to that point, and their "dads" took too long to get the cure. At least Shoto wasn't the only one trying to warm the two of them up.]
Don't apologize, idiot...
[Katsuki's voice is so quiet and weak, a soft murmur and he closes his eyes for a moment just to try and focus on the warmth. As his body shivers in waves from the block of ice still residing in his chest.]
I'll take anything. It's so freaking c-cold...
Edited (changed a word bc i can--) 2025-07-23 04:57 (UTC)
[Once Rinku is back in town and hears about Katsuki's surgery, she sends him a gift box. It's a cooler of blood juice boxes in ice, with a get-well card signed by Rinku (whose autograph resembles a winky face in a heart), Mecchan (who still writes like a four-year-old), and Hina (who just took a crayon in her mouth and scribbled).]
[After a text exchange with Izuku, Katsuki moves from his bedroom to downstairs to look for Shoto. Finding him in the garden, and asking if he'd like to go to the store with the two boys to look for costume supplies. Of course, Shoto agreed and so Katsuki texted Izuku to tell him to meet the two at the mall. A small eagerness building up within his chest that he refuses to show.
The couple walks hand in hand until they reach the entrance of the mall, where Katsuki spots Izuku first. He lets go of Shoto's hand to hurry over to the green haired boy, too shy to continue showing affection in public, and greets him with a small wave of his automail. (Yes, he's been using his automail for just about anything he can now that it moves. Though the hand still can't do much, so the wave is pretty rigid.)]
Yo, Deku. You ready to look for that unicorn costume?
[Izuku greets them with a wave before approaching. Either not having noticed, or just not minding whether they held hands or not, in front of him. It is nice to hang out together like this. Almost reminds him of when their class had all gone shopping together for one of their school trips. And he is glad to see Bakugo's continued improvement with using his automail, too.
And. Of course, he leads with teasing about the unicorn idea....]
Kacchan, I'm not going as a unicorn....! Todoroki-san said we should match, dress up together, right?
[His fingers drop once it's Katsuki who's drawing away; shy trailing behind the shy; and he lags a little before he's properly fallen in step, trailing the blond. It's always fun seeing what others get up to... Though he's visibly softening with his own inclusion, and he smiles sweetly. Today feels different, special, and the mall seems imposing from the outside with this newest "task" now at hand. A happy mission: he tries to stay focused, fails to press the warm excitement down any further, then steps in close.
[It's the middle of the night on Christmas Eve, and the two night-owls were taking a long nap together so they'd be awake and energized in the morning. Izuku was on normal hours, still, and they'd wanted to exchange gifts early and not make him wake up during sleeping-hours. Katsuki knows he'd be more than happy to do that for the other three who were all on a nocturnal schedule, but he didn't want the younger boy sacrificing any sleep just for them. Plus, he wanted to surprise Shoto with a trip to Frostreign today to visit the castle, and their usual schedule would waste a lot of day-time and they may end up traveling too late. (And Shoto usually gets sleepy enough for a nap, anyway.)
So, rather than being wide awake at 2 am, the two are snoozing away in Shoto's futon. Well... they both were snoozing, until Katsuki finds himself waking up because an animal outside rustling around and knocking over a trash can. He blinks blearily, haven had been awoken in the middle of a sleep cycle and barely able to tell that he was even awake at first.
Though it settles in pretty quick, as his eyes adjust to the darkness around the two of them and the heartbeat next to him registers in his ears. Katsuki sits up slowly and turns his head to look over at the sleeping figure in the futon, and as he stares at Shoto's closed eyes he feels this little bubble in his chest swell up. This sudden rush of affection for his partner making him almost dizzy.
His hand moves before he can really think, fingers gently wiping some locks of white from the other boy's face. Tucking them behind his ear as a small smile spreads on his own. He was just so... cute. Cute, and pretty, and all Katsuki's.]
...ne, Todoroki..
[He calls out to Shoto softly, and leans in to press a kiss gently against his cheek. Trying to wake him up, because he can't handle how much he loved the other boy right now. He needed to hear his voice and see him smile-- and so he speaks out again. His voice a little louder, but still a whisper, as his face hovers just barely above.]
[When did Katsuki become so soft? Shoto smiles, though it takes a moment for his voice to brush the sleep back, the kiss what wakes him as his soft, scrunched nose burrows deeper into the quilt. A muffled sound escapes as he squints lightly at the spiked, blond fuzz haloed by the gold-paper lantern he keeps at his bedside. A mess of fringe tumbles into the face he hides, and he shifts eyes drowsily towards the boy framed in the lamp-light. That he's met with affection triggers something he can't describe. As if he's worth the look that keeps him pinned to the futon—another, a second. Looking back though his own expression keeps unreadably subtle, then feels his face heat under his nickname in pink. A "pretty boy", the other says. It isn't missed, even if Shoto struggles to name the feelings behind it, what makes his heart skip.
Every part of their home feels touched by Katsuki by now. He half turns to face the thin, wood lattice of the paper door slid shut, watch rows of string-lights blink lazily around the shape of the doorframe. A real pine sits in the middle of a quiet living-room set on tatami mats, and the soft spice of ginger from one the many lit candles drifts lazily through the halls. It feels like magic, the gold-washed darkness around the flowers he's bought, lends a dream-like haziness to an already slow-crawl awakening.
He's barely moved, but the knight inhales gently, little engine, only to exhale smoke again when he breathes and his lips part. Warming himself to warm the blond—his personal furnace, now—and he holds his look before he pushes himself to a half-lift, folding on knees instead.]
Did we miss dinner...?
[Despair... He brings his hands up to press sides of palms into his eyes, to scrub sleep-stuck lashes free.]
[Katsuki wonders this every day... he used to be known for hating everything and everyone around him. But now he's so in love that it hurts, sometimes. So soft around the edges that his smile is no longer a rare sight. His heart was once encased in thick ice, but ever since entering U.A, it's been slowly chipped away...
Shoto was all he needed for the rest to melt off. His little furnace warming him both on the outside and in. Katsuki tilts his head as Shoto puffs out a little smoke, before understanding that it's meant for him. Waiting patiently for the taller boy to sit up, before snuggling up to him. Wrapping arms around him to hold his warmth close, and nuzzling into his neck in case Katsuki might want a little snack...]
Nah, don't worry. No one's even up yet.
[Sleepy, silly, Shoto. Katsuki chuckles quietly at his boyfriend's immediate assumption, so endeared to how tired and thus cute the other boy could be. He's still getting used to letting himself think things are cute in the first place, but when Shoto was involved? The word just comes naturally to mind.]
I woke you up 'cuz I woke up.
[Simple as that, really. Though of course there's the underlying "I don't want to be awake alone" that's unsaid, here.]

two boys finally confess 🧡💙 sometime in the 20's of july
In the beginning, Katsuki tried his best to do what he could while he was sick. He continued to do his job as a nighttime traffic cop, and tried to do those test things with other people. But by the time day four hit, he was unable to get himself to leave the futon he shared with Shoto. Shoto, who also had been sick as a dog from day one.
